One of the biggest challenges of undertaking home improvement projects is imagining the end result. To address this challenge, Lowe’s Innovation Labs has been a pioneer in exploring how virtual and mixed reality can help customers visualize their new space.

Lowe’s Hologram Experience with HoloLens

Lowe's Innovation Labs partnered with Microsoft to test the Lowe's Hologram Experience in two stores. Customers collaborated with a HoloLens specialist to plan their kitchen renovation in an interactive, mixed reality environment.

Customers could view physical objects, and digital holograms merged through the Microsoft HoloLens headset while standing in a showroom kitchen. Using simple gestures to interact with their environment, customers easily selected from an array of design options and Lowe's products, including cabinetry, hardware, countertops, and appliances.

Lowe's Holoroom

The Lowe's Holoroom was a virtual reality home improvement design and visualization prototype that created an immersive, intuitive experience for customers to envision a room of their dreams.

Tested in 2015 and 2016, the Lowe's Holoroom and Hologram experiences helped us to understand how mixed reality could enhance the shopping experience and simplify renovations. Lowe's Innovation Labs is using the learnings to refine and evolve new virtual and mixed reality visualization and shopping experiences.
